Travertine, and why it endures

Some materials date a room to the year they were installed. Travertine dates a room to nothing at all. It has been the same warm, porous, quietly veined stone since Rome, and that continuity is why we keep specifying it.

What it gives you is temperature. Set against white walls and low-iron glass, travertine stops a room turning clinical. Under evening light it holds warmth the way timber does, without asking for timber's upkeep.

Where it belongs.

It belongs on stairs, on floors, and in bathrooms that want softness without pattern. It belongs on kitchen islands, where honed stone takes the daily knock. We run it filled and honed in wet areas, and unfilled where the texture can live without catching grime.

Where it does not belong is anywhere that wants drama. Travertine is a background material, the quiet under a room's louder moments. Pair it with one assertive stone at most, and let everything else defer.
